A common challenge in schools that embrace restorative practices is to meaningfully engage students in the work, while also empowering them with knowledge about how the criminal justice system works in America. In this workshop, Founding Principal Hannah Kehn and her team will share their journey to create a Youth Court at Humanities IV,  a New York City charter high school founded with New Visions for Public Schools in 2017.   Participants will learn about how the Youth Court at Humanities IV is remarkable in that students are equipped to support their peers with restorative projects, experiences, and mentorship. Through a partnership with Queens Law Associates (QLA), students are supported to facilitate their own Youth Court, and QLA also provides an alternative to suspension for students whose consequence includes a separation from the school community.
